Newsletter #64 December, 2003 - February, 2004

Is There a * on Your Label?

Printing and mailing the Newsletter to over 12,200 people costs us over $30,000 per year. About 1500 of the mailing labels this issue have a * after the person's name. If there is a * after your name it means that we haven't heard from you for so long that we wonder if you're still interested in receiving the Newsletter. If you don't do anything, this will be the last issue we mail to you. There are several things you can do: (1) you can sign up on the website to receive the electronic version of the newsletter, (2) you can send some business our way, (3) you can send a contribution to help cover the cost of the Newsletter, as a few other people have done spontaneously in the past, or (4) you can let us know by e-mail, phone call, post card, or whatever that you really do still want to continue to receive the Newsletter.
People without a * after their name are also urged to sign up for the electronic version of the Newsletter (please let us know to drop you from the dead-tree list) and to send business our way.

23rd Anniversary Sale

December 1 marks Uncle Edgar's 23rd anniversary, and we're celebrating with a huge sale. Come into Uncle Edgar's or Uncle Hugo's and save 10% off everything except gift certificates. A discount card will save you even more-you'll get both the 10% savings from the sale and the 10% savings from the discount card. Come in and save on new books, used books, calendars, jigsaw puzzles, games, audiobooks, music, magazines, model kits, etc. (Sale prices apply to in-store purchases, but not to mail orders.)

The 23rd Anniversary Sale lasts Friday, November 28 through Sunday, December 7-giving you two weekends to take advantage of the savings.
We will also be having our annual inventory reduction sale December 26-31, but that will feature deep discounts on things we really, really want to get rid of. It will not be a store-wide sale, like the 23rd Anniversary Sale.

Doctor Who Books

For over a year it's been very difficult to get Doctor Who novels, after the distributor went bankrupt. Now, new Doctor Who titles are pouring in as the new distributor is bringing in the one new (in England) title per month, plus (usually) a couple of the older titles never before distributed in the U.S. In the last few months, we've received the following Doctor Who paperbacks ($6.95 each):
Blue Box
The Book of the Still
Camera Obscura
The Colony of Lies
Combat Rock
The Crooked World
The Domino Effect
Emotional Chemistry
History 101
The Last Resort
Loving the Alien
Ten Little Aliens
Timeless
Warmonger
Wolfsbane

Holiday Gift Ideas

The single most popular gift option continues to be our gift certificate. We can issue one in any amount. It can be used at either or both stores. It can even be used for mail order, and it can be purchased by phone or by fax (if you have Mastercard, Visa, or Discover Card), and we can mail it either to the purchase or the recipient, or we can just enter the balance on a credit file here at the store, so there's no risk of the gift certificate being lost.
Calendars are another popular gift item. (All calendars are standard wall calendars unless otherwise noted.) This year we have four Star Trek calendars: Star Trek ($12.99), Star Trek Nemesis ($12.99), Enterprise ($12.99), and Star Trek Stardate ($12.99, page-a-day).
This year for Tolkien we have Tolkien ($14.95, illustrated by Ted Nasmith) and Tolkien Diary ($17.00 hc, illustrated by Ted Nasmith).

Fantasy related calendars include Frazetta ($12.95), Dragon by Ciruelo ($12.95), Roger Dean ($13.99), and Faires ($14.99, spiral-bound engagement calendar).

Uncle Edgar's also has a large selection of signed trade paperbacks and mass market paperbacks.
(Note to collectors: This list of signed books is updated once a year for our December Newsletter. Our signed books are also listed on Abebooks.com, and that listing is sometime updated as often as 2 or 3 times per week, depending on how quickly authors are coming through the store and how quickly signed books are leaving the store. Our listing there can be reached by going to http://dogbert.abebooks.com/abe/BooksBrowsePL?vendorclientid=3358938 and scroll down to "catalogs" and click on "Signed". That listing has much more information, but is also more time-consuming to use, and has the sf and mystery titles mixed together.)
