28th Anniversary Sale

December 1 marks Uncle Edgar’s 28th anniversary. Come into Uncle Edgar’s or Uncle Hugo’s and save 10% off everything except discount cards, gift certificates or merchandise that is already marked 40% off. (All jigsaw puzzles and most of the games are already 40% off.) A discount card will save you even more–you’ll get both 10% savings from the discount card and 10% off from the sale. (Sale prices apply to in-store purchases, but not to mail orders.) The 28th Anniversary Sale runs Friday, November 28 through Sunday, December 7–giving you two weekends to take advantage of the sale.
We will also be having our annual inventory reduction sale December 26-31, but that will feature deep discounts on things we really, really want to get rid of. It will not be a store-wide sale like the 28th Anniversary Sale.

Holiday Gift Ideas

Our single most popular gift option continues to be our gift certificate. We can issue one for any amount. It can be used at either or both stores. It can even be used for mail orders, and it can be purchased over the phone (if you have a Visa, Mastercard or Discover Card), and we can mail it either to the purchaser or to the recipient, or we can just enter the balance on a credit file here at the store, so there’s no risk of the gift certificate being lost.
Calendars are another popular gift item, and by now we’ve seen most of the calendars we’ll receive this year.         [Most of the lists of signed trade paperbacks at Uncle Hugo’s and Uncle Edgar’s got squeezed out of the paper newsletter, but are included in the website listings of signed books.]
Both Uncle Hugo’s and Uncle Edgar’s also have large piles of signed mass market paperbacks.

Business News

Sales tax goes up by another .375% for the entire state of Minnesota on January 1; the sales tax numbers on the order form are only good through the end of December, but it would make the order form incredibly complex if we tried to list all the various taxes, regions, and dates.
Sales were down a bit for Uncle Hugo’s in September and plummeted for Uncle Edgar’s (compared to the same month last year). In October (supposedly the worst month for retailers in 30 years), Uncle Hugo’s sales were up quite a bit and Uncle Edgar’s sales drop was only half as dreadful as September. For early November, Uncle Hugo’s sales were up again and Uncle Edgar’s sales were still down, but not as badly as the previous 2 months.
The newsletter tells you approximately when we expect books to arrive. We are now posting the new titles that actually arrive each day on our LiveJournal account site (http://unclehugo-edgar.livejournal.com), as well as information about author appearances and store events. In the future we hope to add book reviews and recommendations, publishing news, and more. If you have internet access, you can read the postings - you don't have to be a LiveJournal member.
We are in the process of converting our website. We'll be implementing a very basic shopping site in mid-November, which will include the new books in this issue of the newsletter, our inventory of signed new books (hardcover and paperback), and a shopping cart. In late 2008 or early 2009 we'll be upgrading to a searchable site, and gradually increasing the number of titles listed, beginning with new releases as they arrive. We currently have about 23,000 used titles listed on ABE, and we're guesstimating about 10,000 new titles in our inventory software - that's a lot of data to be cleaned up and converted to a new format, so it'll be a while before everything is up on the site.
